Sweet Treats

Cupcakes are rolling around everywhere in Tuscaloosa!

A few months ago, the town was buzzing about a new fancy cupcake store opening in MidTown. When the doors of GiGi’s first opened, waiting lines formed and people lined up for a taste of the latest foodie craze. I took it as my civil duty to review the famous mini cakes. They were good! But I can’t have one every week. Just every other time I go home to MS and split one with Momma 🙂

Fast forward a few months and I hear about a new cupcake store. This review is about Sweet Treats which is south of town on Hwy 69S across the hwy from Jim Meyer’s Drugs. Look for the bright pink awning on a blue building.

I walked in and asked for something strawberry, red velvet, or chocolate. The service was AMAZING. There was no rush. I didn’t feel like I was just another dollar (or 3). I felt like an appreciated customer. She showed me the strawberry shortcake, Oreo, and chocolate cake. I got the strawberry shortcake because it looked so good. She quickly boxed it up and let me know they can custom order just about any kind of cake, cookie, or sweet treat. In fact, their motto is “If you can dream it, we can make it!”. I was glad to hear that. My sister in law has some elephant cookie cutters that she would love to have made and decorated for upcoming football celebrations. I’m curious about a lower sugar option as well.

Now to the good stuff.

The strawberry shortcake was everything I was hoping for. I loved the whipped icing. It was light, not too sweet, and still had a very creamy texture. And the best part of the whole thing is the cupcake had actual strawberries in it. It was so fluffy without being gummy. It DEFINITELY tasted like it was made in the kitchen right behind the counter. Some other stores do not make their own cupcakes, but have them shipped frozen and then ice them at the store. Not here. They make everything in the kitchen and I was delighted to see some treats in progress. That is very important to me if I’m going to pay a little more for a gourmet treat.

After a sample of this cupcake, I know I will be back for more. Some flavors that caught my attention:

Red Velvet==I HAVE to try this. I’m a little infatuated with red velvet cake
Key Lime Cheese Cake
Peanut Butter Bliss
Homemade Caramel Cake
Chocolate Raspberry Decadence
Fresh Blueberry Pie
German Chocolate
Carrot Cake Bliss
Butter Pecan
Sweet Potato Pie
Granny Holland’s Pecan Pie

Anybody in town, stop by anytime. And I bet the closer we get to game day, the better the chance we might see some team spirit treats!

[...] Treats is a newer bakery in town and I’ve had the pleasure of devouring a strawberry shortcake cupcake last summer. Since then, I’ve browsed through the Facebook postings on the week’s flavors but I [...]

I will be in town next week and will be making my husband take me there. Maybe instead of frozen yogurt a cupcake will be our treat.

I got some for a co-worker's birthday! We LOVED them-- I actually had class with one of the workers there and told her how much better they are than Gigi's! I had vanilla.. haha it was AMAZING! I usually go for a crazy flavor (like Mountain Dew) but a true test of a baker is if they can make a basic cupcake rock my world.... Sweets did it!
