Sweets Cupcakes and Cookies

It’s no big secret that I love cupcakes even when I try just a bite here and there. It’s hard to imagine that a year ago, we did not have a specialty cupcake store. Now we have 3. I’ve sampled favorites from Gigi’s. And while I do like their flavors, they are a chain so they cannot make seasonal favorites that are exclusive to our town and sports teams. But they have an outstanding red velvet and I love their butter cream icing.

I’ve tried several from Sweet Treats and have not been disappointed. Their cakes are very flavorful and I love the fluffy consistency. They custom make anything you can think of and have seasonal football themed cakes and cookies.

A few weeks ago, friends clued me in to a new bakery in the downtown area called Sweets Cupcakes and Cookies located on Greensboro and 6th. I knew I had to visit and sample what they had to offer, and I hoped they lived up to the reputation. After two trips and 6 cupcakes, I’m a huge fan now.

Last week, I bought the German Chocolate and Roll Tide Red Velvet. What impressed me was again, the cake part. It was fresh and fluffy. It had a lot of flavor. Many places spend a lot of time on the decoration (and it’s important…we eat with our eyes first), but completely neglect the cake. Stephen ate the German Chocolate and gave it big scores. He loved the coconut pecan part of the icing. The chocolate icing had a little something extra to it that made it stand out. I tried the Red Velvet with a unique decoration of Big Al. As far as the taste of the red velvet, it was divine! Not too much food coloring fake taste. The vanilla flavor came through to counter the red coloring. And the icing was not too sweet, but sweet enough for those who can eat the whole thing!

Their selection is outstanding. Their regular menu rotates favorites such as peanut butter cup, strawberry, and the Indecisive (chocolate/vanilla). They have a Sweet of the Week and have featured the Southern Comfort, Amaretto Surprise, Razzle, Mountain Dew, and Cherry Limeade. Their fall menu includes cookies & cream, candy bar creation, caramel apple, maple pancake and bacon, and pumpkin patch. I got the pancake and bacon today and it is unbelievable!!

Football fans in for the big game, college kids here for the winter, and regulars like me, should venture over to Sweets and give them a try. You will not be disappointed!
