One Week later….Sugar Free Tales.

It’s been one week without added table sugar, HFCS, or evaporated cane juice and I’m very pleased with the results. Do I still crave a fizzy coke? One afternoon I craved one so bad I would have sold Frankie for one, but it was 100% due to stress and a bad headache. I instead, went for a walk around the track at school. I felt better after. I drank some water and ate my PUMPKIN SALSA (whole post devoted to this treasure coming up) and felt human again. That’s a good thing because Frankie is perfectly happy being the pampered kitty king that he is. Who am I kidding? If I tried to sell him, he would have shred my running shoes and then me. He’s a little demanding that way.

I have been to Yogurt Mountain and bypassed all the other stuff for the no sugar added stuff. But it was so nasty. It had a certain rubber hose soaked in paint thinner aftertaste. I think it had a ton of aspartame or something in it….maybe paint thinner?  I’m going to have to figure that one out because fruit and granola frozen yogurt is something I don’t want to live without.

I’ve had coffee with honey and it’s divine. Add cinnamon and it’s even better.

I haven’t eaten out much this week and that’s when I would get my sweet tea. I don’t make it at home because I would drink it all. It’s a huge deal breaker for me.

So what are some changes I’ve noticed?

Corn is INCREDIBLY sweet. I had no idea. Pineapple is almost too sweet. Tomatoes have a sweet taste. So one change is that after only 7 days, I can detect the slightest sweetness in foods. When I do crave something sweet…which is rare now…..I can easily find it in fruit. The only exception is chocolate. When I really want a taste of chocolate, I make my chocolate/pb/banana smoothie or I’ll eat a piece of 80% dark chocolate. One bar is going to last me  a while. In the past week, I’ve had 1 piece. But 3 mornings, I made my chocolate shake for after working out.

My sugar levels are better on average. I do not have the spikes. My morning fasting number is usually between 116-130. Diabetes is diagnosed at fasting level of 126. So, I can’t complain too much about those numbers.

Being around sugar items do not bother me. I saw someone drinking a coke every day. I didn’t bother me.

I’m watching Sandra Lee’s Money Saving Meals right now and she’s making all kinds of sugar stuff. Doesn’t bother me. Besides, I watch her to see what kind of yuck-tastic stuff she can throw together and what tacky “Tablescape” she can create in that weird mind of hers. The Denim and Diamonds one tops the crazy list so far.

My only complaint? I haven’t lost any weight. The last time I cut sugar and white carbs, 30lbs literally melted off of me between Nov 5th and Jan 1st. I stuck to eating wheat or other whole grains, so I thought stopping sugar would speed up this puffy marshmallow shedding. Nada. Nothing. The only thing I can think of is I’m not drinking enough water and I’m doing some serious weight lifting in class each morning. My arms are finally getting a cut look to them! And no, my pants are not fitting looser either.

So that’s my story of one week of no sugar. Here’s to week 2!
