Going green

Guess who is ready to plant the garden?

Stephen outdid himself this year. I won’t diminish the importance of my new tomato love. The man came back with more than a few tomato plants. I think those are his favorite things to grow. If he had to do it all over again, he would just go to college, find a rich uncle, and retire early so he could sit around and grow a gazillion tomatoes and tinker with hybrids to create the super tomato of all time. But, that’s just a shot in the dark. Maybe he would have majored in airplane electronics.

Anyway, not only do we have rows of tomatoes, he also designated one raised bed as a flower garden for me. Two years ago, he planted some flowers but did not tell me. One morning, I was looking out of the kitchen window and I saw these bright pink and red flowers that bloomed overnight. By the end of the week, there were hundreds of bright zinnias in the garden. This year, he’s got sunflowers, zinnias, dahlias, texas bluebells, carnations, and a couple of others.

The other bed has my herbs, onions, cucumbers, squash, watermelons, pumpkins, and cantaloupes. It’s going to be a busy summer of watering, watching, and waiting for those first green shoots and leaves. I can’t wait!

I wish I could grow a garden! We had hoped that we would be moved by now and I had planned on making at least a small veggie garden. As much as I love flowers, I don't enjoy growing them. Veggies on the other hand, I LOVE watching them grow and being creative in using them up. Enjoy!

Julia,

Believe me - it's easier than you think! When most people think of gardening, they see tractors or at least tillers and a big plot of land to do it in. But most of us live in neighborhoods with small backyards compared to our parents. One book really sums up how to have a fun garden in really small spaces. "All New Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew explains how to grow veggies from apartment windows to expansive raised beds. You can start small and expand it as your time/space allows.
