Exercise nausea.

I’ve been struggling with this for a while now. When I work out in the morning, I get up so early (4:30) that my stomach just does not want to eat. Lately, I’ve been doing intense workouts with nothing in my stomach. Needless to say, my workout suffers because by the time I’m done, I’m weak and even more nauseated. I carry a honey stinger gel to take when it get’s to be too bad. My blood sugar levels are usually in the 110’s –120’s when I first wake up. However, after a workout, I’m dropping in the 60s.

I’ve been reading on what the numerous experts say about pre-workout nutrition. The general consensus seems to be higher carb foods before a workout and higher protein after a workout for muscle recovery.

Most advice says to eat at least 30 minutes before working out. That makes sense.

But when I get up, I seriously think if I eat something, it will come right back up. And I don’t know what to do about it. I’m not eating my oatmeal because I know that won’t stay down and I go straight to school after the gym shower. I miss my oatmeal. I guess I could take a bowl with the stuff in it and just add water and milk at school and nuke it.  I could also make my protein mocha shake before I leave home and start drinking it after I shower so the protein can get busy.

But what about before I work out?? Before I go to bed, I think about what I’m going to eat when I first get up. By 4:30 am, I can’t force myself to even drink much water.

I’m out of ideas.

I also eat breakfast right after working out. For me, it is the most important meal of the day in terms of recovery.

I never eat before I work out in the mornings. I have a large snack about 2 minutes before I go to sleep, so I think that helps.

Oh that is not a fun feeling! Have you tried drinking a little orange juice or something? Taking a bite of 1/2 a granola bar might do the trick. Try out a few things for a week and see how you feel. I know I get up early and do OK on an empty stomach, but if I am doing higher intensity workouts I drink some juice.

This morning I tried a couple of big bites of almond butter, fruit spread, and wheat sandwich thin. It seemed to help. Thanks for stopping by!

Perhaps you could eat a heartier meal before you go to sleep. I always have my heaviest meal at night, and when I get up I still have enough energy to go for a run with nothing in my stomach. Like you, I just can't eat early in the morning.

Thanks! I'm glad it's not just me. I may try that tonight.
