Pre-workout nutrition…..at 4:30am

This week, I’ve been getting up about 2 hours earlier than normal so I can attend Tuscaloosa Boot Camp. Normally, I eat breakfast before working out because if I don’t, I risk a sugar free-fall. The first two mornings, the idea of oatmeal or eggs or smoothies made me shudder. I settled on a mini Cliff bar and some milk.

This morning, I woke up before the alarm and craved oatmeal! Finally. I love oatmeal and my body responds well to my version. I always have a protein mixed in, usually in the form of a raw nut butter, granola,  and flaxseed. When I made mine, I only made half a cup prepared. I knew I didn’t want to risk having too much in my stomach before working out at  high intensity.

It was good, and it was not too much for a hard workout. I’ll stick to this for a day or two before trying a smoothie.

What about non-diabetics? Is it crucial that they eat before a tough workout? If you ask anybody, you’ll get different answers. Some say definitely yes! Some say “no way”.  I am in the camp that says that a body needs a little fuel for the body to workout efficiently. However, for those who just can’t, I go back to the saying….whatever works for you!

Are you in Ttown? I go to Headhunters CrossFit 4 days a week and Northridge a few days as well. I have my CrossFit blog (fiteffy.blogspot.com) and I recently started attending one morning CrossFit session (class is at 5:30 a.m). AWFUL, but I'm doing it. Just one day a week...I love to work out in the evenings, but teaching 3 nights a week at Shelton doesn't really give way to be able to do that effectively! Thanks for your tip!

I have one of Angela's (from Oh She Glows) vegan energy bars before I work out in the morning...that seems to work!

If I'm running a race, I'll usually eat an english muffin but other than that, I've had too many stomach issues that stem from exercising right after I've eaten. When I did a bootcamp, I didn't eat beforehand, but you're right, it's totally an individual thing for non-diabetics. Are you enjoying the bootcamp?

I used to always workout on an empty stomach. I don't know HOW I did it!! Now I have to have a little bit of fuel in me. I have a 5K in the morning and I'm thinking I'll probably go with a waffle, a little PB, maybe a few egg whites...
