Two weeks down. Whole 30 Day 14

I’m halfway through this round of Whole 30 and at the midway point, I’m finally feeling a LOT better. The headaches are completely gone. The cravings are no longer even on the radar. When I think about how long it has been since I’ve popped a coke tab, I want to kick myself. I’m convinced  that soda is my absolute downfall. It is my gateway drug to more sugar foods that I enjoy, but slowly lose the objectivity to enjoy in moderation. I passed on sugar for my birthday. I didn’t need it and didn’t want it.

This time around, it it about something other than losing weight. My weight is still down to my lowest point since going full Paleo last year. But the weight distribution was slowly changing. I was more puffy in the face and hands and stomach. I have no idea if I’ve lost weight and don’t really care about the scale. I can tell my face has thinned back to normal and my hands are no longer looking like oven mitts. My clothes are a little looser in the waist area.

So if its not about weight, what’s the big deal? It’s about health. I got really worried when my glucose went crazy in my last race. I know that’s not healthy. I had been ignoring the warning signs of a slowly increasing fasting glucose level. Instead of a long run of sub 100, I was back to long run of 110-135. But again, I was hanging on to that weight number like a beacon. I told myself that as long as my weight stayed down, I was fine. But then my pancreas had a good laugh and showed me who was really boss. And that’s why I’m sitting here at day 14 with a big smile on my face. Sugar no longer controls me.

Along with this book, which is the Whole 30 manual and then some, I’ve really enjoyed reading a new book about the science behind gluten and other autoimmune issues.

It’s called The Paleo Approach by Sarah Ballentyne, also known as The Paleo Mom. It’s more than just an intro to Paleo. It’s more of a directory of autoimmune disorders and how removing various foods that CAUSE autoimmune reactions can greatly improve health. Both of these have been extremely helpful to me. Knowing the HOW and WHY of autoimmune diseases makes them easier to treat. It was just a few years ago that most people were told they were crazy. Or they had the umbrella catch-all “Irritable bowel syndrome” and comfort drugs were the only option. Or went through the skin allergy testing only to be told that food was not the enemy, meanwhile the body was under attack from that very thing. When you hear “knowledge is power”, that is exactly what The Paleo Approach did for me. Keep in mind, it is NOT a Cookbook…but there is one on the way this fall Smile.

Now I’m off to enjoy some great sleep, ready to wake up hungry for whole food, and get busy tearing my junk room apart to make way for a new office space. Happy Sunday and Paleo On!
