Clean Eating

lean eating is the ONLY way to gain and keep tight control over blood sugar. But eating clean is for EVERYONE, not just diabetics.

What exactly is clean eating? According to Tosca Reno, author of The Eat Clean Diet, and one of my favorite difinitive experts on eating clean, the following principals will jumpstart anyone on a road to better eating….a lifestyle of better eating.

Eat whole foods. Stop buying and eating the stuff that is in the pretty packages on the shelf, that processed food that is filled with refined sugar, added sodium, unhealthy fats, white flour, as well as additives and preservatives. Yes, I know it makes the “food” (dead food in my opinion) taste good, but you’d be surprised how good real food tastes once you kick the processed stuff.

Eat smaller meals throughout the day every 2-3 hours. Space out your meals and eat smaller amounts at each sitting. This will keep your blood-sugar levels even and keep your metabolism up. The book includes 2 weeks worth of sample meals so that you learn how to put your meals together the way that Tosca eats.

Exercise portion control. Eating clean isn’t enough, you also need to use portion control because if you overeat on whole foods, you either won’t lose or you will maintain your weight.

Drink plenty of water. Tosca recommends 8 full glasses each day. However you measure it, be sure to get in that water.

Drop the sodas. Sodas are filled with either refined sugars or artificial sweeteners. Either way they don’t help you lose weight or maintain good teeth. They can also get in the way of you drinking your fill of water, which you do need to keep your body in tip-top working order!

Exercise regularly. Not only cardio, the type of exercise that keeps you in your target heart rate for at least 30 minutes, but also strength building exercises. Lift HEAVY!!

Stop Dieting and Make it Your Lifestyle. I mentioned this above so this is just a reminder that short-term dieting isn’t going to help you keep that weight off. When you make clean eating your way of life and incorporate regular exercise, you won’t have to worry about the weight coming back. ;)

Have some greens

February 22, 2012

I love quinoa. I love Kale. Why not put them together? I only started eating kale in the past couple of years when I read they were not as bitter as turnip greens. I love them mixed in just about anything because they wilt down and have a mild flavor. Better yet, they are a [...]

Pasta e Fagioli

It’s no secret that Olive Garden is one of my favorite places to eat. I remember my first taste of the breadsticks, the Zuppa Toscana, the Alfredo. I have many memories from college days when we would drive an hour into Memphis just to eat at Olive Garden. Stephen and I had our first date [...]

Enter Sandman

February 17, 2012

I’m awake and ready to spread cheer and happiness to everyone in the lands. Why am I so bright eyed and bushy-tailed? According to my Fitbit, I had a good nights’ sleep. I’ll gladly take 6.5 hours of actual sleep since the previous nights were around 4.5. And I don’t feel bad about not going [...]

Icicles

February 11, 2012

No, they aren’t hanging but it’s so cold outside I feel like one. Believe it or not, this is our first taste of winter. For weeks, we’ve had very mild weather that required little more than a long sleeved shirt or sweatshirt. My coat is still hanging in the other closet. My intense winter running [...]

How to have a very bad day

February 9, 2012

I know many people are very talented at tooting rainbows and unicorns out of their behinds every day. You know those people who wake up and just KNOW the world is their oyster. Honestly, anyone who wants to compare their world to a shell filled with a snotty chewy creature that tastes like salty a$$ [...]

Mystery dinner

February 8, 2012

Dinner tonight was something I made up all by myself. It’s called throw crap in a bowl and make it taste good. Everyone should try it. Technically, its a “pasta salad”. My husband wanted me to buy one of those boxes of pasta salad that has that clear bag of plastic veggies pieces. Maybe they [...]

Soggy Saturday Steaks

February 4, 2012

Well one thing can be said about us in the South. We do not pay close attention to calendars. If the weather is nice, we do nice things. Like grilling in February. Unfortunately, the week long anticipation of a nice grilled steak and vegetables was quickly drowned by rain. The day started out overcast and [...]
