After the Binge—cease and desist.

There are days when nothing goes right. We all have them. Car trouble, money mix ups, mean people, and the list goes on. Some days, life is outstanding. Everything goes your way. Every light is green.  The scale smiled instead of groaned. Kids are angels. Your buffet britches are too loose to wear.

Guess what these two scenarios have in common? Food and bingeing. Got a great promotion? I guarantee there is a bucket of rocky road waiting after the celebratory dinner at the five-star restaurant. Got called in the boss’ office and it’s not good news? I doubt you’re craving raw veggies and hummus with green tea and a flax shake.

Most of us give in from time to time to less than stellar food eating choices. It’s often said that life is too short to pass up dessert. (wait……maybe I’m the one that often says that….) But life is also too short for heart disease, diabetes, obesity, asthma, etc. As a diabetic, I’m well-aware of the life span of my major organs. How I treat them now will determine how long they will continue to work for me.

So, a big ol’ night (and day) of overeating happens. Now what?

Stop eating.

Follow these steps:

1) Don’t panic. You can’t gain 5lbs in one day of overeating even if the scale shows it the next morning. Most of that weight is water-retention.

2) Water water water. Drink it. Eat high-water content foods such as fruit and raw vegetables. The more water you drink, the faster you flush out the salt.

3) Get in a workout ASAP. A hard sweat session will jump start the metabolism and endorphins. Remember Legally Blonde? “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands. They just don’t”.  So, get some endorphins and nobody gets shot.

After these 3 things, your body should feel better. Don’t dwell on it. Don’t make excuses. Just face it and move on.

Happy endorphin hunting!
